Joint Workshop DESIRE and EEA on “Indicators for the Green Economy”, 17 March 2015 Brussels

DESIRE strives for development of an indicator system in a demand-oriented way, in close connection with relevant stakeholders. For this purpose the DESIRE project organizes a joint workshop with EEA on Green Economy Indicators. This workshop offers the opportunity for a structured knowledge exchange between researchers, experts and policy-makers, with the aim to develop policy relevant research questions as well as answers and solutions.

Some of the indicators can be explained in more detail, while other novel indicators are still in a conceptual phase. In a one-day meeting, stakeholders researchers and stakeholders be interactively involved to discuss dilemmas and bottlenecks that were engaged during the indicator development so-far.

Green Week DESIRE Side Session 2014, Brussels (June 4, 2014) and Stakeholder platform meeting, Brussels (June 5, 2014)

Green Week side session "Developing a System of Indicators for a Resource Efficient Europe (DESIRE)" took place at the Green Week Conference 2014 Circular Economy, Resource Efficiency and Waste. The main objective of the side session was to address the quantitative measurement of resource efficiency, making a link between theoretical concepts, practical assessment and policy implications.
During this session, the speakers presented an indicator framework, quantifying biodiversity, ecosystem services as well as human welfare 'beyond GDP'. The discussion explored the potential benefits of these indicators for the circular economy and resource efficiency policies.

New concepts, indicators and policies for resource efficiency

The flagship initiative for a resource-efficient Europe under the Europe 2020 strategy supports the shift towards a resource-efficient, low-carbon economy to achieve sustainable growth. Together with two other leading EU research projects (EMInInn (Environmental Macro Indicators of Innovation), BRAINPOoL (Bringing alternative indicators into policy) and POLFREE (POLicy options For a Resource Efficient Economy)), DESIRE organized a session on concepts, instruments and indicators for resource efficient policies and addressed a link to policy making. This session was aimed at the target groups related to resource efficient policy-making: policy makers, NGO’s and scientists in this field.
